Filmes provocativos, únicos em sua visão e de baixo orçamento. Este são os principais critérios do Independent Spirit Awards, premiação considerada o Oscar do cinema indie americano.

O road movie Little Miss Sunshine e o aclamado drama sobre drogas Half Nelson são os favoritos. Ambos receberam cinco nomeações cada. Quatro filmes estão nomeados em três categorias cada: American Gun, The Dead Girl, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints e Man Push Cart. O diretor Robert Altman, que morreu na semana passada, foi indicado por A Prairie Home Companion.

A cerimônia de premiação acontece no dia 24 de Fevereiro, um dia antes da entrega dos Oscar. O evento é organizado pelo Film Independent, um grupo com sede em Los Angeles que promove o cinema independente.
